God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His word to my heart is never ending. I am getting married in just a few short weeks and with all the excitement, the endless list of to do’s, preparation and more it has been hard to keep up with so many things…as you might see my blog being one of them, but more important my time with the Lord. He is my light, the One who lifes me, strengthens me, speaks directly to my heart and often moves me to tears of joy. So, I find condemnation easily besets me when I don’t give Him my time either in worship or reading the bible, journaling, and the list of what I am not accomplishing with excellence, or just accomplishing goes on. There is a song Jenn Johnson of Bethel Music wrote back in 2004 that I came across when hunting through my worship sheet music to just sit and play something, it is called A Little Longer. I loved this song when I first heard it years ago, and I was reminded of why I love it still. As I sat frustrated with myself over all the unaccomplished things, half done things, or things I deem done without excellence, especially not giving God the undivided attention His is so worthy of…I pulled this song out and played. As I sat and my fingers embraced those keys, something of much more importance embraced my heart. The words of my heart, somewhat matching the words of the song were, “what can I do for you God, I know I am not doing enough…” and my mental, but heartfelt list of self condemnation went on. Until God, in His infinite wisdom and love, drew my attention to the actual lyrics of the song instead of the lyrics I was reciting…
What can I do for you
What can I bring to you
What kind of song would you like me to sing
I’ll dance a dance for you
I’ll pour out my love to you
What can I do for you beautiful king…
Then I hear you sing to me
You don’t have to do a thing
Just simply be with me and let those things go
It can wait another minute
Wait this moment is too sweet
Please stay here with me
And love on me a little longer
Cause I’m in love with you
Need I say more? Goodbye list of undone and to do’s…I have a date with the King of my heart.
We have all been in a season in our lives where we are not the biggest fan of how situations are turning out, but have you ever been in a season where you are watching the amazing work of God’s love in your life and love the process? That is current my season. I am learning much and growing in a new way and my heart is captivated by the situation and God’s love and direction through it all. It’s felt like a loooong time coming…but God is never late.
You see, lately I have been actively feeding on His faithfulness (Psalm 37:3)…which simply means to be rejoicing in all that God has done for me.
He pursued me in my sin and brokenness and called me holy. (Hebrews 10:10)
He pursued me when I felt ugly and called me lovely. (Psalm 45:11)
He pursued me when I rejected Him and ransomed me anyway. (Hebrews 9:15)
God’s love has pursued me (as well as it does you) and captivated my heart. His love at work orchestrating situations (as I trust Him) has captivated my heart again and my heart sings about His faithfulness.
We all have times in our lives when we want to do anything but rejoice…but let’s remember that the Israelites 11 day journey turned into 40 years in which many didn’t even make it to the Promised Land. Why? Because they refused to feed on God’s faithfulness, rejoice in what He had miraculously done for them, they chose instead to complain and had hearts far from Him. Personally, I want the 11 day journey. In fact, maybe it’s not so much about the Promised Land as it is about the journey…will we sing and hold onto hope through it or complain and let our hearts be far from God?
May you be encouraged today that God has not forgotten the promises He has made you, He has not forgotten the deep desires of your heart…for you are unforgettable. I am a firm believer that what matters to us matters to God. May this month be a time where your heart is captivated by what God is doing (and has done) in your life; that you see His love at work and are able to walk in joy knowing that He is sovereign and working on behalf of those who trust in Him. (Isaiah 64:4)
So go ahead and post the lyrics to Nat King Cole’s Unforgettable on your mirror and let your heart be captivated by the One who loves you…remembering all He has done and rejoicing in all He will do.
